Step 1: Obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC)

  • The first step in the process is to obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Regional Transport Office (RTO) where your bike is currently registered.
  • If your bike was bought on a loan, you would also need an NOC from the bank.

Step 2: Reassignment of the Vehicle

  • Once you have the NOC, you can apply for the reassignment of your vehicle. This should be done within 12 months of moving your vehicle from one state to another.
  • You will need to fill out Form 27 and pay the appropriate fee and tax as specified in Rule 81 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules 1989.

Step 3: Required Documents

The following documents are required for the reassignment process:

  • Application in Form 27
  • Certificate of registration
  • Proof of residence
  • No Objection Certificate
  • Insurance certificate
  • Pollution under control certificate

  • If the move is permanent, you will need to re-register your vehicle in the new state.
  • This involves providing all the required documents and using the name of the new owner in the papers.

This cost primarily depends on the weight and model of the bike and the distance between the current city and the new city.

Can I drive my vehicle without re-registering it in the new state?

According to the Motor Vehicles Act, of 1988, a person is allowed to keep a vehicle for 12 months in any state other than the state where the vehicle is registered.

However, a new registration with the new state’s registering authority has to be made within 12 months.

If you happen to drive your vehicle without transferring the registration even after one year, the traffic police can detain your vehicle. But, if you are moving the vehicle temporarily to a different state for a period of up to one year, re-registration is not required5.

What happens if I don’t transfer my bike’s registration?

If you don’t transfer your bike’s registration after moving to a new state, you may face legal issues. As per the law, if a vehicle is in a new state for more than 12 months, it must be re-registered in that state. Failure to do so can result in penalties, including the possibility of your vehicle being detained.

Do I need to pay road tax in the new state?

Yes, when you re-register your vehicle in the new state, you will be required to pay the road tax applicable in that state. The amount of road tax varies from state to state and is usually calculated based on the vehicle’s age, engine capacity, and other factors.

Can I cancel the No Objection Certificate (NOC) if I decide not to move?

Yes, if the move to a different state does not happen, you will need to cancel the NOC. It’s important to do this to avoid any legal complications in the future.
