What is the Bike Registration Number?

bike rc

A bike registration number is a unique alphanumeric code that identifies your bike and its owner. It is issued by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) of your state when you register your bike for the first time. The registration number consists of four parts:

  • The first two letters indicate the state code, such as MH for Maharashtra, KA for Karnataka, etc.
  • The next two digits indicate the RTO code, such as 01 for Mumbai, 02 for Pune, etc.
  • The next two letters are chosen randomly by the RTO.
  • The last four digits are assigned sequentially by the RTO.

For example, MH 02 AB 1234 is a bike registration number from Mumbai, Maharashtra.

How to Change Bike Registration Number?

The process of changing your bike registration number in the same state in India varies depending on whether you want to transfer your old registration number to a new bike or get a new registration number for your existing bike.

Transfer the Old Registration Number to the New Bike

If you have bought a new bike and want to transfer your old registration number to it, you need to follow these steps:

  • Get a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the RTO where your old bike is registered. This will prove that you have no pending dues or challans on your old bike and that you are eligible to transfer your registration number.
  • Submit the NOC along with the following documents to the RTO where your new bike is registered:
  • Form 29 (Notice of Transfer of Ownership of a Motor Vehicle)
  • Form 30 (Application for Intimation and Transfer of Ownership of a Motor Vehicle)
  • Original Registration Certificate (RC) of your old bike
  • Original Insurance Certificate of your old bike
  • Original Pollution Under Control (PUC) Certificate of your old bike
  • Copy of Aadhaar Card or PAN Card or Passport or Driving License of both the seller and the buyer
  • Copy of Address Proof of both the seller and the buyer
  • Two passport-size photographs of both the seller and the buyer
  • Pay the required fees for transferring the registration number. The fees vary depending on the RTO and the type of vehicle. You can check the fees on the official website of your state transport department or ask at the RTO office.
  • Get a receipt from the RTO and affix a temporary registration number on your new bike until you get the new RC with your old registration number.

Get a New Registration Number for the Existing Bike

If you have moved to a different city within the same state or want to get a new registration number for your existing bike, you need to follow these steps:

  • Get an NOC from the RTO where your bike is currently registered. This will prove that you have no pending dues or challans on your bike and that you are eligible to change your registration number.
  • Submit the NOC along with the following documents to the RTO where you want to get a new registration number:
  • Form 28 (Application and Grant of No Objection Certificate)
  • Original RC of your bike
  • Original Insurance Certificate of your bike
  • Original PUC Certificate of your bike
  • Copy of Aadhaar Card or PAN Card or Passport or Driving License
  • Copy of Address Proof
  • Two passport-size photographs
  • Pay the required fees for changing the registration number. The fees vary depending on the RTO and the type of vehicle. You can check the fees on the official website of your state transport department or ask at the RTO office.
  • Choose a new registration number from the available list at the RTO. You can also apply for a fancy or VIP registration number by paying an extra amount. The process and criteria for getting a fancy or VIP registration number vary depending on the state and RTO. You can check them on the official website of your state transport department or ask at the RTO office.
  • Get a receipt from the RTO and affix the new registration number on your bike.

Benefits of Changing Bike Registration Number

Changing your bike registration number in the same state in India has several benefits, such as:

  • You can avoid legal hassles and fines from traffic police or RTO officials who might question your registration number if it does not match your current location.
  • You can enjoy the benefits of local schemes and subsidies that might be applicable to your bike, such as lower road tax, toll exemption, etc.
  • You can enhance the look and appeal of your bike by getting a fancy or VIP registration number that suits your personality or preference.
